Long-term breeding bird monitoring program in Southeastern Poland

Dear Observers! The Małopolskie Ornithological Society encourages continued data collection and entry into the MTO Observation Database using the ornithological atlas method and taking control of selected atlas squares. Currently, we are processing data on bird occurrences from the years 2014-2021. However, this does not mean the end of our activity and our main goal, which is the continuous monitoring of bird populations in our region. This requires the regular collection of data on bird occurrences and numbers, especially during the breeding season. Therefore, we are launching the atlas program once again, and its results will serve for ongoing assessments of the state of our avifauna, as well as for future regional and nationwide studies. The map displaying the distribution of atlas squares can be found on our MTO Observation Database. Read more...

Fungal communities in woodpecker cavities

Dear Observers! Alicja Wolska, a Ph.D. student at the University of Agriculture in Krakow, is conducting research on the presence of fungi in woodpecker cavities as part of her doctoral thesis. To achieve this goal, it is essential to find an adequate number of cavities that have been excavated and used by various woodpecker species for breeding purposes in the current year. This project is not only aimed at professional and experienced ornithologists but also at individuals who derive joy from observing nature, particularly birds. Here is a detailed description of the project, available at the following link: https://bio-obserwator.pl/dziuple-dzieciola/ . On behalf of Alicja, we kindly request that you report observations of woodpecker cavities (from all over Poland) that have been excavated and used for breeding purposes this year. Read more...

Peregrine Falcon nest in Skawina OPEN!

On July 6, 2023, at noon, we removed the cage from the nest platform on the chimney at the CEZ Skawina power plant and opened the nest of reintroduced peregrine falcons. The action was carried out during the feeding of the birds and went very smoothly – none of the falcons got scared during the lifting of the structure and left the nest. Shortly after the nest was opened, the birds vigorously exercised their wings on the platform. The first flight of one of the birds occurred after about 1.5 hours. The falcon circled the chimney and perched in the control opening on the other side of the chimney at the nest's height, where it stayed at least until 4:00 PM. The other two falcons peacefully rested on the platform after their meal... Read more...

This time, three young males marked with rings 7DS, 8DS, and 9DS will soon contribute to the Peregrine Falcon population in Małopolska. One of them has received a transmitter, which was purchased thanks to the donors supporting our project. We sincerely THANK EVERYONE who helped in obtaining the logger for one of the birds! Mixed pairs and hybrids of Syrian and Great Spotted Woodpeckers

On behalf of the coordinators Łukasz Kajtoch and Łukasz Wardecki, we invite you to participate in a scientific project related to mixed pairs and hybrids of Syrian and Great Spotted Woodpeckers. The aim is to collect information about the extent of hybridization between Syrian and Great Spotted Woodpeckers and the ecology of hybrids in urban and rural populations. It is worth noting that the main range of the Syrian Woodpecker in the country (the entire Małopolska region and the southern part of Lubelskie and Kielce regions) is located in the area of the Małopolska Ornithological Society's activities! Therefore, the activity and involvement of observers from our region can contribute to a better and more comprehensive understanding of hybridization in these two woodpecker species! Methodological outline: transect system... Read more...
